Haha, Sony must really suck at making batteries.Computer giant Apple is recalling 1.8m batteries used in its laptop computers worldwide after overheating complaints. The announcement affects laptop computers - the iBook G4 and Powerbook G4 - sold between October 2003 and August 2006. "We discovered that some Sony batteries in previous models of PowerPC-based iBooks and PowerBooks do not meet Apple's standards for safety and performance," Apple said in a statement. "Our number one priority is to recall and replace the affected batteries free of charge." According to US safety officials, the batteries were made by Sony, which also supplied similar batteries to Dell. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said that Sony, as the manufacturer of the recalled battery packs, "is responsible". While Apple is not expecting any "material financial impact" from the recall, Sony predicts that the recall of its Dell and Apple batteries will cost the firm between 20bn and 30bn yen ($172m to $258m). Insert generic "apple sucks" comment here. |

The owners of a new restaurant named "Hitler's Cross" in the Indian city of Mumbai have changed its name after protests from the Jewish community. The restaurant opened last week in the city's outskirts, initially displaying a giant poster of Hitler. But now one of the restaurant's owners has acknowledged that naming the restaurant after Hitler was "most inappropriate" and has apologised. The small Jewish community said they were insulted over the choice of name. Weird. |

The server that hosts Salmon's services is going down in the next week or two. Basically, I can't afford it. I'm cutting down all of my outgoings to see if it's possible to do my last year at University without a job. This will greatly help my chances of getting a 2-1 or above. Salmon, Axiom Knights and my personal domains will be moved over to a server hosted by James and will provide basic web and email services. Additional services that were previously available will no longer running. This includes the ventrilo server and backup ftp. The following domains are hosted and will be affected by this change. alternative-paintball.com and redirection domains -> Seek alternative hosting axiomknights.com -> Rehosted on tasty error203.com -> Seek alternative hosting freakingawesome.biz -> Seek alternative hosting iamnotasalmon.com -> Rehosted on tasty madhamster.org -> Rehosted on tasty pish.biz -> Rehosted on tasty stupidcunt.biz -> Rehosted on tasty timmeh.co.uk -> Seek alternative hosting vypersite.com -> Seek alternative hosting I have not included domains which are no longer pointed at the server, but if you want the files that were previously hosted here, download them now. Any domain not listed will not be transfered to the new server. Mail accounts for all domains that are being carried over to the new server will remain intact, however you will probably lose the email stored in these accounts, please back it up now. These changes haven't been given an exact date, but when a date is reached, it will be posted here. Stay tuned for further information. |

| RIAA loses court case | |

THE RIAA'S policy of accusing people of file sharing and then threatening them with court action if they do not stump up huge wodges of cash has suffered a bit of a setback. Oklahoma mother, Debbie Foster, was accused by the RIAA of illegally downloading downloading music over Kazaa back in November 2004. The RIAA said that it would leave the single mother alone if she paid $5,000. However, Foster didn't have $5,000 and more to the point, she had not downloaded any music. In fact she didn't own a computer or know how to use one. Her name was on the broadband bill. After finding a lawyer to represent her, Foster managed to get the case to court where the RIAA tried to cut its losses and withdraw. However, that would have meant that Foster would have to pay her legal costs and so she tried to get the court to rule that the RIAA case should be dismissed 'with prejudice' which meant that she could get the Recording Industry to pay her legal bills. The RIAA opposed the motion because it makes it more costly to back out of cases where there is a shortage of evidence to get to court. So far the RIAA has taken dead people and grandmothers to court on the basis of its technical evidence. If a few more fought back, its attempts to lean on people to settle out of court before a trail might prove a bit costly. |
