Posted by joe (6 Comments) Sat Jun 26th '04 05:43:41 PM
Summer's here, and the time is right for a new release of Slackware (so start dancin')! As always, thanks to the many dozens of people who contributed during this development cycle to help make this the best release of Slackware ever.

Highlights of the 10.0 release include GCC 3.3.4 (with GCC 3.4.0 as an alternate in /testing), the Linux 2.4.26 kernel (with Linux 2.6.7 as an alternate choice in /testing), X11R6.7.0 from X.Org, Mozilla 1.7, GNOME 2.6.1, and KDE 3.2.3. Of course, there are many more improvements than can be listed here (considering that the ChangeLog has grown more than 2000 lines since the last release).

Read the official announcement here.

To order the official release of Slackware (and help support the Slackware project), visit the Slackware store.

ISO images are available through BitTorrent here.

A list of mirrors that are likely to be among the first offering the 10.0 release may be found here.

Thanks again to the kind folks in #slackware @irc.oftc.net for helping with the BitTorrents!

Awesome! Chucking this on my home routercomputer soon! emoticon

iPod your BMW!
Posted by James (4 Comments) Tue Jun 22nd '04 01:07:56 AM
If you’re lucky enough to own a BMW and an iPod today's your lucky day. Apple announced Monday that certain BMW models will allow iPod users to listen to their music seamlessly. Using the controls on the steering wheel.

Apple Computer Inc. on Monday unveiled an adapter that lets users of its iPod digital music player connect them to stereo systems in some BMW and Mini Cooper models and use buttons on the steering wheel to play their music libraries. Apple and BMW AG said in a joint statement that the adapter, priced at $149, would work in BMW's 3 Series, Z4 Roadster, X3 and X5 SUVs and the Mini Cooper, and will be powered by the car, not the iPod's battery.

Drivers plug the iPod into a cable in the car's glove compartment and then can control the iPod using the standard buttons on the steering wheel, the companies said. Some new cars already have audio jacks that can be used to connect digital music players, including the iPod, to car stereos, and devices using a car's power outlet and a cassette player or a small radio transmitter are available. However, many new cars no longer have cassette players.

Italy approves 'jail for P2P users' law
Posted by James (9 Comments) Fri May 28th '04 01:22:41 PM
Italy has made transferring content via the Internet without the permission of the copyright holder a criminal offence

The Italian parliament yesterday voted in favour of imposing jail sentences of up to three years on anyone caught uploading or downloading unauthorised copyright material to and from the Net. The move comes in direct response to the rise of P2P services such as Kazaa and Gnutella, and was prompted by the country's film industry.

Until now, Italy's copyright laws, which date back to 1941, have focused on protecting copyright holders from those who seek to profit financially from the unauthorised duplication of content. The new law extends that to anyone who performs such an act, whether for financial gain or not.

In short, by sharing music for free, Italian P2Pers risk punishment almost as severe as if they had attempted to sell pirate CDs.
