Sharp Introduces 3-D Computer Display
Posted by James (4 Comments) Tue Aug 10th '04 07:48:48 PM
As kid I can remember using those cheap 3D glasses you'd get in movie theaters, or even comic books to look at 2D base objects. You know things like pictures, TV shows, etc... Today Sharp has released a 3D 15-inch LCD display for consumers (LL-151-3D). This new display is priced at $1,499, but even at that price it’s still pretty attractive. It's no secret that Sharp wasn't the first kid on block with a 3D LCD (excluding its laptop lineup), but Sharp can be credited with pushing this technology into the consumer market.

The idea for 3D displays isn't anything new medical and scientific industries have been using them for quite a while now. This consumer targeted 3D display is definitely worth mentioning. Sharp's 3D display allows users to switch between 2D and 3D modes. As you can guess with the 2D mode you get a basic picture. When using the 3D mode a special layer on the LCD is activated giving you the illusion of a 3D view.

What's even more impressive is that the 3D display works with 2D based images. If you want to see the best 3D illusion you'll need programs that offer support for Sharp's 3D display. It's worth noting that Sharp is working hard with ATI and Nvidia to deliver 3D image support. Not stopping there Sharp is also partnering up with technology giants Sony, Sanyo, and Toshiba. Together these companies will help with the adoption of this new consumer display technology.

Since Sharp introduced its 3D display last year it’s been getting a lot of attention. Including two different display modes for users which will probably be the key selling point. Especially when Sharp is still lining up partners for its 3D display. Right now not many (if any) programs can fully take advantage of this technology. So giving the users the option to switch back to the 2D mode if the 3D mode isn’t working properly is just a great move.

AMD trumpets Windows XP SP2 virus blocker
Posted by James (1 Comment) Tue Aug 10th '04 07:45:23 PM
Chip firm AMD said that now Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 is released, its enhanced virus protection using the NX flag can be enabled on all Athlon 64 processors. AMD said that the enabling of the NX flag will go some way to protect against viruses, worms and Trojans.

Microsoft rep Will Poole, said in AMD's press release: "The combination of Windows XP Services Pack 2 with advanced security technologies and improved hardware technology, as found in enhanced virus protection from AMD, is an important step in providing a multi-layered defence against many common online threats". AMD's NX flag is enabled in Athlon 64 desktop and mobile chips and some code, particularly buffer overflow attacks, from damaging a system.

edit: I think intels itanium has this too, though it's known as XD (eXecute Disable) rather than NX (No eXecute)

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival begins on Sunday in the Scottish capital, with more than 1,700 shows taking place over three weeks.

The 58th festival features performances and shows from right across the arts spectrum, with more than a million tickets expected to be sold.
The famous and the newcomers will be providing entertainment at 236 venues. These include some unusual sites in which to see shows, including an Indian restaurant and a sports car.

Bagpipers, singers, mime artists and street entertainers have already arrived in the city for the festival, which runs until 30 August.

On Sunday afternoon the traditional Edinburgh Festivals Cavalcade will weave its way through the city centre to mark the start.

The cavalcade, which has been running since 1976, will be led by motorcyclists on Harley Davidsons, followed by the entire cast of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Among this year's most publicised shows is Jeffrey Archer's Prison Diary Hell - a stage adaptation of the disgraced Tory peer's diary from his time in Belmarsh Prison.

Hollywood star Christian Slater has been forced to delay his British stage debut with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, at the Assembly Rooms.

The all-star stage adaptation of Ken Kesey's seminal novel had to be postponed after Slater caught chicken pox.

The Fringe will also feature a political satire called Guantanamo Baywatch.

Seasoned comic performers this year include Rob Brydon, Jenny Eclair, Paul Merton and the voice of Bart Simpson, Nancy Cartwright.

Brydon, the star of cult BBC 2 show Marion & Geoff, reprises his role in The Keith Barret Show as the hapless chauffeur turned relationship expert in a new live show at The Pleasance.

Cartwright brings her one-woman show - called My Life As A Ten-Year-Old Boy - about the trials of life as the voice of dysfunctional cartoon hero Bart, to the Assembly Rooms.

International drama is provided by acts from Zimbabwe, Norway, Montenegro, Ukraine and Kosovo.

To support the changes in the new theme I'm going to have to rearrange some things, mostly sidebar changes.
If something looks a bit odd, don't worry - it'll all be fine when the new theme is finished!

I've posted this as a news item just to make sure everyone knows before they go to create a 'site broek!!' thread emoticon

Please comment in this forum thread, cheers.
