| Gmail As Storage Medium in Linux | |

Some people might say the 1GB space Gmail is offering to it's users is way too much for the average email-user, Richard Jones however found another way to use Gmail. He's using it as a storage medium for himself. Using a self written program called GmailFS it allows one to store files using the 'normal' file operations such as; read, write, open, close, stat, symlink, link, unlink, truncate and rename. This means that you can use all your favourite unix command line tools to operate on files stored on Gmail (e.g. cp, ls, mv, rm, ln, grep etc. etc.). On Jones' website you can read more about it and how to use and install GmailFS, which he claims to be his first program coded in Python. It's just the question what Google thinks of this, as this may lead to the storage of applications or other copyrighted material on Google's servers. Something they would definitely NOT be proud of. Physicists have carried out successful teleportation with particles of light over a distance of 600m across the River Danube in Austria. Long distance teleportation is crucial if dreams of superfast quantum computing are to be realised. When physicists say "teleportation", they are describing the transfer of key properties from one particle to another without a physical link. ![]() with a quantum computer this image could be rendered in real time In the computers of tomorrow, this information would form the qubits (the quantum form of the digital bits 1 and 0) of data processing through the machines. |

![]() Microsoft's new software - dubbed "XP Lite" - will feature lower resolution graphics and limited options for networking computers together. It will also limit users to running three programs concurrently - a far cry from the full version of XP, where the only practical limit comes from the speed of the computer and the size of its memory. It will be available initially in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and two other as yet unspecified Asian countries. Microsoft said it hoped the new software would also help deter consumers from buying pirated versions of its XP system, widely available in many Asian countries. |

British scientists have been given permission to perform therapeutic cloning using human embryos for the first time.![]() The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority granted the licence to experts at the University of Newcastle. They are investigating new treatments for conditions including diabetes, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. The controversial decision could open a new era of research by scientists looking for remedies for diseases. The research will take place at the International Centre for Life in Newcastle, involving experts from the Institute of Human Genetics at Newcastle University, and the Newcastle Fertility Centre. Scientists there believe this is the first time such a licence has been granted in Europe, as well as in the UK. But they warn it will be at least five years - if not many more - before patients could receive stem cell treatments based on their work. Therapeutic cloning is carried out for medical reasons. It is the same technique that was used to create Dolly the cloned sheep. Even though the science is similar, the technique is different to reproductive cloning, which aims to create a human being Read more at the BBC. |
