Stargate(s) Renewed!

SCI FI renews SG-1, Atlantis!
MONDAY - NOVEMBER 15, 2004

Both Stargate SG-1 and its spin-off series Stargate Atlantis have been renewed for another season, The SCI FI Channel announced today, ending months of speculation. The two series will return for 20-episode seasons, to commence filming in March for a summer premiere on the cable network.

It will mark an amazing ninth season for SG-1, which has been a ratings powerhouse -- both in new episodes and daily reruns -- for SCI FI since moving to the network in 2002. The series will also tie The X-Files for bragging rights to the longest-running science fiction series in U.S. television history.

Atlantis gets its second season, for which it was a shoe-in based on its highly-rated first season. The July series premiere drew 4.2 million viewers to SCI FI, an original series record for the network. Atlantis continued its performance throughout the summer, making it the highest-rated show on SCI FI.

Actors Joe Flanigan, Torri Higginson, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrell, Rainbow Sun Francks, and Paul McGillion will return for Season Two of Atlantis. (The five principal cast members have signed six-year deals with MGM.) Executive producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper will also stay on in their roles for both series.

MGM is still in negotiations with the cast of Stargate SG-1 for Season Nine. Of note is actress Amanda Tapping's ("Samantha Carter") new baby, who will be born in March -- right around the time filming is scheduled to begin. Speculation has also flown that star Richard Dean Anderson ("Jack O'Neill") could ask for his shooting schedule to be reduced even further, perhaps even so far as to make him a recurring character instead of a regular.

I'm not sure how recent this really is but it's certainly new to me.

Be the first to enjoy the UK’s fastest broadband service

UK Online has smashed through the Internet speed barrier with the introduction of our unique 8Mb broadband service. UK Online Broadband 8000 is available in selected areas now, and will be available to more than 4.4 million homes across the UK by early 2005.

Ground breaking speed at a ground breaking price
Download speeds of up to 8Mb
Upload speeds of up to 400k
Contention ratio of 33:1
Only £39.99 a month
One-off set up fee of £50
Wireless Ethernet Router for £69.99
Subject to reasonable use. See our Product Terms

Reasonable use seems to be 4GB/day, which I know "heavy users" (ld...) could smash within hours... still, the mere fact that 8mbit is being touted is impressive enough on it's own.

The BBC News website has scooped a prestigious prize at the Online News Association awards in Hollywood.

The site won the main award for general excellence in journalism, beating CNN.com, WashingtonPost.com, and the Wall Street Journal website.

The Online News Association says on its website that the judges "were effusive in their praise for this site, noting that it has continued to improve and innovate" since it last won the award in 2001.

"They provide breaking news around the world and around the clock in multiple languages," it added.

"The site is well-designed and easy to navigate... They set the standard for online news."

Telewest Broadband (blueyonder) has created quite a stir today after announcing that it intended to deploy a SECOND speed boost to its hi-speed services at no extra cost. The 'upgrades' will occur between December'04 and January'05, pushing speeds up to 4Mbps!:

In the wake of recent research* showing consumers have a preference for unlimited internet services, the cable company also pledged to keep its blueyonder internet services free of usage caps, allowing customers to surf into the new year with peace of mind.

The permanent bandwidth upgrades will be rolled-out from December and should be completed by January 2005, stepping up the pressure on slower internet providers using BT's network to deliver services.

All of Telewest Broadband's existing 750Kb, 1.5Mb and 3Mb blueyonder internet customers will receive the faster access speeds automatically, with no need for new equipment and no additional fees.

Leading the pack will be a new ultra-fast 4Mb service - the speediest cable service in Britain and the fastest home internet connection available from any internet provider outside of London. Advanced internet users should also appreciate a boost in the upstream speed of this flagship service, allowing large files like digital photos to be sent up to 50 per cent faster.

The overhaul will see the following options available:

* blueyonder broadband 4Mb
* The flagship 3Mb service will become an even faster 4Mb connection, offering download speeds up to 80 times faster than dial-up access, for the same price of £50 a month. The upload speed will also be increased from 256Kb to 384Kb

* blueyonder broadband 2Mb
* The 1.5Mb service will get a boost to 2Mb, still at £35 per month

* blueyonder broadband 1Mb
The standard service will increase in speed from 750Kb to 1Mb and still cost £25 per month

* blueyonder broadband 256Kb
The entry-level 256Kb service will remain unchanged and is currently on offer for £14.99 per month (for the first 12 months, £17.99 thereafter)

Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer at Telewest Broadband, said: "This will be the second time this year we have increased the speed of our blueyonder broadband services, doubling the original bandwidth with no increased costs and no introduction of caps.

"This isn't a short-term offer and there are no catches - we're simply giving broadband users what they want, thanks to our advanced cable network. Christmas is a time for giving, so anyone fed up with Scrooge-like behaviour from their ISP knows where to come for faster, unlimited internet access."

Suffice to say that Telewest has taken a lot of people by surprise with this news, especially since they haven’t been the best at keeping secrets in the past emoticon.

We wouldn’t be surprised if NTL eventually follows, but it’ll probably be well into 2005 before that.

In a recent poll more than 80% of our readers voted in favour of pushing broadband speeds up to 4Mbps and beyond.
