Flash-based iPod days away
Posted by James (1 Comment) Thu Jan 6th '05 11:10:26 AM

Apple's long-rumored flash-based iPod will be introduced at Macworld Expo in 1GB and likely 2GB versions, Apple enthusiast website Think Secret has confirmed. Various details regarding the device have emerged days before Apple CEO Steve Jobs is set to unveil the tiny music player during his keynote address.

Rapidly falling flash prices have enabled Apple to buy 1GB modules from Samsung at a relatively low cost, sources report, which in turn will allow Apple to sell the device for $149. Sources have also suggested that a 2GB version, packing two tiny 1GB flash modules, may sell for $199.

The device is currently being manufactured by Taiwain-based Asustek, which Apple brought on towards the end of the summer as a second ODM for manufacturing iPods. Sources say the flash-based iPod will be powered by a chipset from SigmaTel and that it will feature a screen that is the same width as the iPod mini's but two lines shorter.

Not certain at this point is what sort of touch-based interface the device will use. Some sources have suggested that device will forgo Apple's ClickWheel, featured on the iPod mini and 4G iPod, and will instead have more buttons, like the first generation iPod.

InPhase shows off holographic disc drive
Posted by play_boy_2000 (2 Comments) Thu Jan 6th '05 02:07:23 AM
OPTICAL storage outfit InPhase has said that it has developed what it thinks is the first prototype of holographic storage drives that can be used for commercial purposes.
While the company sounds like another boy band, they appear to have come up with the goods. The prototype has been reviewed and photographed at the Pabster and can handle capacities of up to 1.6 TB.

The company is planning a range of holographic drives, with data capacities that range from 200GB to 1.6TB.

It works with Blu-ray 407 nm blue lasers to provide high capacity holographic storage. The data is recorded into two-chemistry photopolymer WORM material. This is 1.5 mm thick and is sandwiched between two transmissive plastic disks.

InPhase was uncertain when the devices will hit the shops

BitTorrent hub ready to rumble with Hollywood

You've gotta be pretty committed to do this.

Quote
A brave BitTorrent server operator has decided to pick a fight with the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and is asking for donations to help it mount a legal defense against the movie studios.

LokiTorrent is one of the numerous BitTorrent hubs being sued by the MPAA for pointing users to copyrighted films. A number of other popular BitTorrent sites shut down their operations after being sent cease and desist letters from the MPAA, but LokiTorrent has vowed to press on and face the studios in court.

At the time of writing, LokiTorrent has raised $22,000 in donations and is seeking a total of $30,000 per month for its defense.

they now have $34841. If they lose this could surely cost them loads if the MPAA gets awarded expenses.
