http://upload.tastyspoon.com/uploads/200502/moz_fximg_small.gifOn February 15th, exactly 99 days after it was released, Firefox 1.0 smashed through the 25 million download milestone.

"Thank you." says Blake on spreadfirefox.com "Thank you for helping us take this product from 25 to 25 million, from our little corner of the world to yours, from the technically elite to Karen and Rimone."

"Twenty five million Firefox downloads is a significant achievement, and we see that number continuing to grow," said Mitchell Baker, president of the Mozilla Foundation. "Firefox is being rapidly adopted by the mainstream, with this audience embracing Firefox as a more user-friendly web browsing solution."

Firefox downloads have continues at a steady rate since it's launch in November, with well above 200,000 downloads per day.

With Internet Explorer 7 being released as beta in the summer, and Firefox 1.1 planned for June, 2005 is looking to be a pretty good for browser development (lets hope, eh). Click Read More... to see the full Mozilla Press Statement

UK Leads Illegal TV Downloads Market
Posted by James (2 Comments) Fri Feb 18th '05 05:02:21 PM
http://upload.tastyspoon.com/uploads/200502/03-18-south-park-inside.jpgMore and more Brits are turning to the web to download their favourite TV shows, research has revealed. A report found the country was at the head of a "worldwide explosion in internet TV piracy". Nearly a fifth of all downloads come from the UK, compared with 7% from America.

Researchers from internet tracking firm Envisional found the Fox drama, 24, was the most popular download. Other popular shows have included Desperate Housewives, The OC and The Simpsons.

Envisional chief operating officer Ben Coppin said: "The internet is revolutionising how people watch, obtain, and view television programmes. It's now as easy to download a pirate TV show as it is to programme a VCR. Indeed, it is as easy to download a television programme though a website as it is to schedule your VCR to tape the episode."

Mr Coppin urged broadcasters to counteract the threat from online piracy by launching a their own visual download services: "If TV companies were to offer episodes for download at a small cost at the same time as they air offline they could generate revenue in the same way that Apple's iTunes does."

IE7 for Windows XP (SP2) Beta: Summer 2005
Posted by James (8 Comments) Tue Feb 15th '05 07:35:47 PM
http://upload.tastyspoon.com/uploads/200502/ie.gifThanks to an alert at the featured sites community website, we are at liberty to share news on the new version of IE, of which so far, will only be available for Windows XP SP2 customers. Speaking at the Keynote Address at RSA Conference, Gates confirmed it:

“We’re installing Windows XP SP2 companywide on over 50,000 desktops because we recognize that its security enhancements are significant. As the frequency of attacks against computer systems increases, it’s becoming critically important to have our systems protected against hackers, viruses and other security risks,” said Joseph Martella, director of End User Computing, Product Engineering at Merrill Lynch.

Building on those advancements, Gates announced Internet Explorer 7.0, designed to add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility that customers have come to expect. Internet Explorer 7.0 will also provide even stronger defenses against phishing, malicious software and spyware. The beta release is scheduled to be available this summer.

Gates also announced the Windows Update beta to start mid-march, and a final version of the Windows Anti-Spyware tool to be made available to all customers of licensed Windows at no charge.

Wikipedia might move to Google

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/38/Wikipedia_logo_nohat_only_wikipedia.pngGoogle has offered the Wiki Media Foundation, which organises the huge free online encyclopaedia, the Wikipedia, a free hosting spot.

In a notice posted to the nonprofit outfit’s site, Wiki Media said its board was thinking about the terms of Google's offer and plans to meet with the search company in March.

Wiki Media said that any relationship established with Google would not require it to begin advertising. Google has told CNET that it supports the Wikipedia and was looking for projects the two could do together

ZDnet are also reporting the story here.

hmm, the Wikipedia website has been horribly slow recently. I'd be interested to see what comes of this.

Sections of a well-known Madrid office building 32 storeys high disintegrated on Sunday morning after a fire raged through the upper floors.

No one is believed to have been inside but firefighters say the entire structure is now at risk of collapsing.

The fire was put out on Sunday evening, but officials say the building's skeleton could have been weakened by the high temperatures.
