It took very little time before techies added the kinds of functions to the PSP that Sony did not include -- and may never have intended. One man needed only 24 hours to get a working client for Internet Relay Chat, or IRC, an older messaging platform. Other "hacks" include a way to transfer TV shows recorded by the TiVo digital video recorder to the PSP; a program for reading ebooks, and a viewer for comics downloaded from the Internet. Much of the new PSP functionality comes from using the Web browser built into the racing game "Wipeout Pure," which was meant to go to a Sony site. By changing some of the PSP's network settings, the browser can be pointed to an Internet portal. A number of people have already set up such portals, formatted to fit in the PSP's screen and offering links and a place to enter Web addresses. The technology blog Engadget has rounded up a number of those links. Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the Japanese conglomerate's U.S. gaming unit, did not respond to requests for comment There's some speculation that sony left loopholes on purpose, and tbh i wouldn't be at all surprised if its true. |

Blair sets 5 May as election dateThe general election will be held on 5 May, Tony Blair has formally announced. Speaking after asking the Queen to dissolve Parliament next week, Mr Blair said Labour had a "driving mission" for a third term in office. The Conservative and Liberal Democrat leaders pre-empted the announcement by starting nationwide tours of key seats. Michael Howard accused Mr Blair's government of "losing the plot" while Charles Kennedy said he would focus on people's hopes, not their fears. Government drops ID card plans Controversial plans to introduce a compulsory ID card scheme across the UK will not become law ahead of the election, Charles Clarke confirmed. The home secretary said the Tories had decided "to kill the bill" and said Labour would re-introduce the plans if re-elected on 5 May. Mr Clarke blamed splits within the Conservative Party. A Tory spokesman has said it would be "quite wrong" to blame them for any failure to pass law before an election. |

| Hitachi announced today that 20GB 2.5cm hard drives will be commercially available by the end of next year. This represents a "density breakthrough" which will allow much higher capacities than today's drive technology. Current micro-drives, such as the ones used in the iPod Mini, max out at 6GB. This new "perpendicular" recording technology would allow for a 20GB iPod Mini in 2007. Capacity of such micro drives are expected to reach 60GB within 5-7 years. The technology, of course, will also bring increased capacity desktop drives which could max out at one terabyte. | |
