Apple Computer plans to announce Monday that it's scrapping its partnership with IBM and switching its computers to Intel's microprocessors, CNET News.com has learned. Apple has used IBM's PowerPC processors since 1994, but will begin a phased transition to Intel's chips, sources familiar with the situation said. Apple plans to move lower-end computers such as the Mac Mini to Intel chips in mid-2006 and higher-end models such as the Power Mac in mid-2007, sources said. The announcement is expected Monday at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco, at which Chief Executive Steve Jobs is giving the keynote speech. The conference would be an appropriate venue: Changing the chips would require programmers to rewrite their software to take full advantage of the new processor. IBM, Intel and Apple declined to comment for this story. There was talk a few weeks ago but now it's looking like a actual possibilityedit: CONFIRMED - APPLE TO USE INTEL CHIPS

![]() ![]() "No, it's not a Mac Mini. It's AOpen's new Pentium-M based Mac Mini lookalike, codenamed Pandora. Unveiled at Computex 2005, this tiny product is yet another AOpen effort to take advantage of the powerful formerly mobile Intel CPU in the desktop space. A fully integrated system incorporating wireless LAN, the Pandora was brought to prototype form in just a month, according to Joseph Hsu, a Technical Manager at AOpen. It uses a single blower fan that turns on only when needed. The aluminum casing was warm but the fan was not running when these photos were taken in the hot tradeshow room. A pearl white enamel painted version was also shown at AOpen's private suite display. Look for a Sept market release date." |

Just an idea of the performance gains: Once you install this new driver you should see around ten per cent plus performance increase in 3Dmark05, Aquamark 3 and Halo and Tomb Raider: AOD games and benchmarks. ATI did this by using some Z optimisations, removing unseen pixels before running through the pixel shaders. I guess that this is an allowed method and Halo might be running even fifteen per cent faster. The Chronicles of Riddick will work up to fifteen per cent faster than with the old Catalyst 5.5 drivers and ATI did more efficient storage of vertex data and gained some performance that way too. Doom 3 will work almost twenty per cent faster than with Catalyst 5.5 as ATI made more efficient use of memory. Even games such as Call of Duty will benefit from this new driver as the driver team managed to increase the game efficiency resulting in close to ten per cent faster performance. The game that will benefit the most is Lock on: Modern Air combat where you will be able to see an incredible fifty per cent performance increase just by installing a new 5.6 Catalyst driver Read the rest Here. |

| 'Winamp plug-in for your iPod betters iTunes' ? | |

A COMPUTER SCIENCE student from Cambridge University has perfected a plug-in for the music management software Winamp that allows iPod users to dump Apple's iTunes and use Winamp instead. Will Fisher said he picked up on the open-sourced project after buying an iPod and struggling to integrate his music collection on his iPod with that on his PC managed by WinAmp. The 20-year-old took on work begun by Justin Frankel, creator of Winamp and P2P system Gnutella. Frankel decided to open source his work on the ml_iPod plug-in and Will says it sat on a virtual shelf until he picked it up and ran with it. "I just found iTunes inconvenient," young Will told the INQUIRER. "So we added lots of features to the ml_iPod and now it's a little better than iTunes. It allows you to copy music from an iPod to a computer and it integrates with a DRM removal tool that allows you to remove DRM on the fly." Apple's iTunes does not permit users to move music from the iPod to a computer. You can put 'em on but you can't take 'em off. The Winamp iPod plugin works with all kinds of iPod, from the first-generation, to the iPod shuffle and the latest models. You can download it here. So far it's been downloaded over half-a-million times. View: Story at The Inquirer |

A popular ringtone track is set to scoop the top spot in the UK singles chart, on course to beat Coldplay's comeback to number one on Sunday. The Crazy Frog's Axel F is currently outselling the Brit-winning band's new single Speed of Sound, according to early retail reports. HMV said the Crazy Frog was now almost certain to top the new chart.Coldplay recently became the third UK band to have a new entry in the US Top 10 singles chart with Speed of Sound. They had been tipped to take the UK number one slot with their first single for two years. HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said Crazy Frog would be the first hit ringtone to cross over into the singles charts in this way. He said: "Music purists might not be too happy at the prospect of the Crazy Frog outselling Coldplay. "But it shouldn't come as that much of a surprise when you consider its huge novelty appeal and the massive amount of exposure it's currently getting. "Kids obviously find it cute and cool, but students and even office workers seem to be drawn to its rather kitsch, ironic appeal. "The only real issue is whether the record label can press enough copies to keep up with the huge demand that we're seeing right now." The profile of the Crazy Frog mobile phone ringtone has been raised in recent months through heavy television advertising. It is a new version of the Beverly Hills Cop movie theme tune by Harold Faltermeyer, which reached number two in the UK 20 years ago. |
