Italian director Ruggero Deodato, whose last horror picture was the rarely seen 1993 giallo THE WASHING MACHINE, has revealed to Fango that he is seeking to make a follow-up to his notorious 1980 splatter epic CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. “I want to do it—I have written two stories,†says the director, who notes that he will be busy until February shooting his new serial for Italian television. “One is a very metropolitan story, like CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST but set in Rome. The other is closer to the original, and set in the jungle. I hope that it will be possible to shoot it, but I don’t know. Just now in Italy, it is not easy to find financing.â€Thankfully, Deodato (who says he has “no idea†when the upcoming American HOLOCAUST DVD is slated to be released) confirms that if CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2 does forge ahead, there will be none of the cruelty toward wildlife that helped make the original film controversial. “No—I am finished with that, no more,†he says. “I was stupid to introduce animals.†—Calum Waddell For those who have not heard of or seen Cannibal Holocaust, it's one of the goriest films ever written. It contains depictions of people being stabbed through the tits etc. It also has actual live animals being brutally killed for amusement. Which got it banned in several countries. It's really quite disturbing. A must see. |

Beautifulpeople.net is an online club which admits only the most beautiful people - through a vicious selection process. Applicants enter a profile and picture, which sit on the site for 72 hours. Fully signed up members - opposite sex only - are then invited to vote on the applicants' attractiveness. Most people don't make it any further. Since launching in April, the UK site has been contacted by 30,000 hopefuls. Only one in 15 have got through. Given the site is a thinly veiled singles club, this is dating eugenics. [The marketing director] cheerfully admits the site is not politically correct but points out that apart from dating opportunities, the chatrooms are filled with people discussing Iraq and Tony Blair. |

A Silicon Valley startup claims to have cracked one of most elusive goals of the software industry: a near-universal emulator that allows software developed for one platform to run on any other, with almost no performance hit. Transitive Corp. of Los Gatos, California, claims its QuickTransit software allows applications to run "transparently" on multiple hardware platforms, including Macs, PCs, and numerous servers and mainframes. "This opens up a whole new world of things you can do, because previously software was tied to (a) particular processor," said president and CEO Bob Wiederhold. "It gives you access to a much greater diversity of software." The company claimed QuickTransit eliminates the need to port software from one platform to another. Software applications written for one platform will run on almost any other, without any modifications to the underlying program. For example, Wiederhold said QuickTransit will allow the next-generation Xbox (which will have a Mac-like PowerPC chip) to run first-generation Xbox software (which was written for an Intel chip). In demonstrations to press and analysts, the company has shown a graphically demanding game -- a Linux version of Quake III -- running on an Apple PowerBook. "One of the key breakthroughs is performance," Wiederhold said. "You can't tell the difference between a translated application and a native application." Transitive launched the software on Monday with versions for Itanium, Opteron, x86 and Power/PowerPC chips. The company is initially going after the server and mainframe markets because that's where the money is, but said it will eventually focus on desktop PCs and consumer electronics. It claims QuickTransit will support almost any pairing of processor and operating system. |

The popular DVD ripping tool DVD Decrypter has ceased all activities following an order by an as yet unnamed company. The author of the program, known only as LIGHTNING UK! had originally put up a notice on his website but that his since been taken offline. It seems the battle is far from over, with the record companies and film industry closing in on every tool and peer to peer software. I very much doubt this will be the last we hear of similar actions taken against other popular tools that are released on the basis of 'back up your DVD'.What started as a bit of fun, putting a GUI around some existing code, turned into something that I can only describe as ‘part of me’ – yes, I know that’s sad ;-) As I"ve recently been made aware (by a letter, hand delivered to my door, last Tuesday), due to some law that was changed back in October 2003, circumventing copy protection isn"t allowed. Ok so it has taken a while (almost 2 years), but eventually "a certain company" has decided they don"t like what I"m doing (circumventing their protection) and have come at me like a pack of wolves. I"ve no choice but to cease everything to do with DVD Decrypter.I realise this is going to be one of those "that sucks - fight them!" kinda things, but at the end of the day, it"s my life and I"m not about to throw it all away (before it has even really started) attempting to fight a battle I can"t possibly win. |
