Cyan Worlds Inc. shuts up shop.

The company behind the highly successful Myst series is calling it a day. Almost all of Cyan Worlds, Inc. was laid off today, including me. I know with the talent we have here people will find new places to go and do great things. Apple hints at big music announcement

Apple Computer is preparing a major announcement next week, dropping hints of something as critical to the company's future as the release of the original iPod in 2001. By the sounds of things It's probably going to be the launch of the iTunes phone and perhaps a replacement iPod mini that uses flash storage. BBC TV channels to be put on net

The BBC's TV channels will be made available on the internet, BBC Director General Mark Thompson has confirmed. He announced plans for the MyBBCPlayer - which will allow viewers to legally download seven days of programmes - at the Edinburgh Television Festival. He said he hoped the service would launch next year. Mr Thompson said that unless the BBC adapted "we won't deserve or get licence-fee funding beyond 2016... that is very definitely not our plan". ... In a departure from past corporation policy, the player would also enable viewers to buy items via the BBC site. "The idea that in the age of the iPod that the public would not welcome the opportunity to buy a piece of music they heard on the site seems to me to be ridiculous," he said. ... Proposals to make clips available on mobile phones are also being speeded up, director of TV Jana Bennett said last week. The BBC received a "wake-up call" about the demand for new technology in March when the first episode of the new Doctor Who was leaked on to the internet, she said. A BBC spokesman said the corporation was aiming to simulcast a channel permanently but would restrict it to UK viewers only. "These plans are subject to the approval of the board of governors and the resolution of rights clearance issues on content like music and imported shows," he said. As well as the simulcast plan, more shows are set to follow the lead of BBC Three comedy The Mighty Boosh and appear on the internet before TV.

Laptop thief 'good for business'

The owner of a CCTV surveillance shop which was robbed by a hooded thief has said the incident was "the biggest boost to business imaginable". The suspect was caught stealing a £700 laptop on eight separate cameras at CCTV Surveillance Solutions in Dale Street, Manchester, last Saturday. Store owner David Arathoon said people saw his clear CCTV images in the press and wanted that for themselves.

F**cking sign thieves

The mayor of an Austrian town called 'F**king' has appealed to British tourists to stop stealing the road signs. Siegfried Hauppl said the small town always attracted a lot of attention from tourists driving up from nearby Salzburg to pose for pictures in front of the signs. But he said that, while the money they spent in the area was welcome, locals were fed up with having to replace the signs because people had been stealing them as souvenirs.
