Singer Isaac Hayes is to stop providing the voice for a character in cartoon South Park because he objects to its "inappropriate ridicule" of religion.

Hayes, 63, who is the voice of the lustful Chef, has been a regular on the show since its US TV debut in 1997.

But co-creator Matt Stone said Hayes had "never had a problem" until the Scientology Church, to which Hayes belongs, was parodied. "In 10 years and over 150 episodes of South Park, Isaac never had a problem with the show making fun of Christians, Muslim, Mormons or Jews.

"He got a sudden case of religious sensitivity when it was his religion featured on the show." "

Hayes is to be released from his contract.

NTL:Telewest merger completes
Posted by joe (2 Comments) Thu Mar 9th '06 07:12:07 PM
http://upload.iamnotasalmon.com/i/default/telewest-logo.gifWell, it's official, we are all now officially NTL Inc., after (the old) NTL Incorporated became NTL Holdings, Telewest then became NTL Inc., and merged with NTL holdings to create NTL Inc.

Confusing? Yes.

NTL Incorporated (or 'ntl:telewest' as its more commonly known for now) is issuing this advice:

What have you announced today?
ntl and Telewest announced today the completion of their merger, creating the UK's largest consumer broadband company and leading triple play service provider. Today's merger represents great news for customers. It creates a new force in the communications market, with the scale and resources to fully exploit the unique capabilities of cable.

Why have you done this?
We will be better positioned to meet the future needs of our customers. It'll mean that we can provide exciting new services to cable customers.

How will this benefit me?
We are better positioned to meet your future needs as a cable customer. The new company will provide exciting new services to customers. We are also maintaining the ongoing improvements to existing products and customer services.

How will this affect me?
Today it's business as usual. There's no change to your services, telephone number, email address, contracts, prices or customer service contacts as a result of the completion of the merger. However it may speed up the development of new services for you to enjoy such as higher speed broadband, greater choice of TV and lower cost telephone services. It is very good news for cable customers.

What happens next?
We are committed to ensuring that customers get maximum benefit from the merger, but this will not be achieved overnight. Completion marks the start of a wide-ranging integration process. We will communicate frequently and openly during the process.

Surely my services are going to change?
Today it's business as usual and there's no change to your services, contracts, prices or customer service contacts as a result of the completion of the merger. However, we will go through a process of integrating the businesses, based on taking forward the best of both. As decisions are made and changes take place, we will ensure that information is communicated to you as early as is possible.

-Ed: I fear this can only mean bad things. It appears NTL eventually wants to merge service packages. Depending on if NTL change their own services, this may involve an introduction of caps to blueyonder users, which is certainly not good. In other reports, blueyonder topped some recent ISP awards whereas NTL came *last*. *ahem*.

World population set to cross 6.5 billion people

On Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7:16 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, the population here on this good Earth is projected to hit 6.5 billion people.

Along with this forecast, an analysis by the International Programs Center at the U.S. Census Bureau points to another factoid, Robert Bernstein of the Bureau's Public Information Center advised LiveScience. Mark this on your calendar: Some six years from now, on Oct. 18, 2012 at 4:36 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the Earth will be home to 7 billion folks.

These are estimates, of course, but clear trends emerge from the data behind them.

Population profile

A report issued by the Bureau in March 2004 noted that world population hit the 6-billion mark in June 1999. "This figure is over 3.5 times the size of the Earth's population at the beginning of the 20th century and roughly double its size in 1960," the study explained.

Even more striking is that the time required for the global population to grow from 5 billion to 6 billion—just a dozen years—was shorter than the interval between any of the previous billions.

On average, 4.4 people are born every second.

100Mb Broadband to be debuted in UK
Posted by James (2 Comments) Mon Feb 13th '06 02:19:16 PM
http://upload.tastyspoon.com/uploads/200512/ntl.gifCable company NTL will be trialling a new service in March. In partnership with Arris and BitTorrent the trial will take place in Ashford, Kent. The 100Mb speed will be 10 times the highest speed offered by NTL at the moment.

NTL aren’t just offering this speed increase out of the goodness of their hearts, the bosses at NTL have been working hard over the past few months, with a takeover of Telewest broadband currently taking place and a proposed bid for Virgin Mobile. This move will add another direction to their plans. With a 100Mb service HD videos will be readily available, and with the support of BitTorrent these can easily be shared, with appropriate licenses of course.

A 100Mb service will mean that the UK will finally compete with the rest of the world in terms of high speed broadband, with countries in Europe and Asia offering speeds of 10Mb or higher years ago. It will also be a huge push for HD technology in the next year, with on demand movies available and the possibility of a service that could rival Sky’s ‘Sky+’ package.

It’s definitely a rollercoaster of a time at NTL at the moment, just a fortnight ago broadband users around the country were subject to regular cuts in their service and there have been frustrated calls from users disappointed with their new 10Mb connection. One things for sure though, when a 100Mb service becomes available speed enthusiasts will be queuing up to put pen to paper.
